A downloadable mod

Tax Evasion 3D is a gameplay mod for GZDoom, inspired by Build games and various dystopian sci-fi works.

Set in an alternate Earth, this mod pits you against an immoral, tyrannical federation's armed forces. Gun down agents, shock robots, blow up tanks, and send scientific abominations to the afterlife with a varied arsenal of tools for destruction. Don't expect a walk in the park, though; the enemy roster has been upgraded as much as your weapons have.

TE3D is, at its core, still Doom, covered in a very fancy, shiny coat of paint. The mod itself, however, takes a lot of inspiration from Build Engine games such as Duke Nukem 3D and Blood. Play not for a power fantasy, but to conquer a challenge. Damage RNG has been stripped out and replaced by consistent damage numbers.

Many enemies have alternate attacks with their own gimmicks and quirks; we recommend playing to learn them on your own, but below is a manual that explains the quirks. Weapons are a similar case.

Many features can be customized. Want different menu music? There are options, go wild. Don't want all the extra flare to the weapons, like smoke and casings? Go ahead and disable 'em. See the TAX EVASION 3D OPTIONS section of the menu to tinker to your heart's content.

Install instructions

TE3D requires the latest version of the GZDoom source port and is a modification, not a standalone game. Due to the features used, it is not compatible with any other ports.

1. Obtain a copy of a compatible game. IWADs that are compatible with TE3D include:

⦁ All DOOM IWADs; DOOM.WAD, DOOM2.WAD, TNT.WAD, PLUTONIA.WAD, etc. etc.

⦁ Freedoom phase 1 & 2 (included)

⦁ Chex Quest (mostly so far)

⦁ Heretic (partially compatible)

2. Install the latest version of GZDoom, found at https://zdoom.org/downloads

3. Once GZDoom is installed, simply launch taxevasion3d.pk3 with GZDoom.exe; the easiest way to do this is to drag it onto GZDoom.exe.

4. Enjoy!

I've been playing this a few times and it's been super fun! I do think the turn rate of the homing rockets for the Revenant replacement are a bit too much; in small rooms with no cover they can be a certain death sentence if you're struggling to that point, and there are plenty of maps with small room ambushes with Revenant critters placed to pop up.

Otherwise, this has been a great deal of fun to play with!

Appreciate the kind words! Is this with v1.1.1? I nerfed their rockets heavily in v1.1; if their turn rate is still too high, I'll be issuing another small nerf in the next patch.

I feel foolish, I have not checked for updates for a while.

I just played the latest one and the rockets are perfect! Some great changes all around!

This is some very great work, and also kickass to use with different textures to really make for an alternate game feel to it.

The laser rifle eats my fps to a crawl, is there is there a way solve this?

In the current version, unfortunately not; I plan to look into a possible solution, e.g. a 'performance toggle' that downgrades its particles. Is it a constant FPS drop while firing, or just when doing specific things like killing enemies?

It happens when firing. The weapons are extremely fun to just regretting not able to use the laser rifle.

I've tossed together a possible solution, here's a quick test update that may or may not remedy the frame loss. It adds a new option for "fast" lasers with downgraded particles; let me know if this treats the issue. If so, I'll push it as a proper patch. If not, I'll continue tinkering.

The option is under "Visual Options" in this version.

When you say partial Heretic compatibility, what do you mean? Just weapons working with no special interactions? Specific levels breaking? What?

Sorry for the late reply! "Partial" just applies to what it replaces; it replaces everything that has a Doom analogue, like weapons, but there's still a chunk of things (i.e., the artifacts and enemies) that are left as-is. As far as we know, there's no breakage, it should function unless something was missed in testing.
